L8a


Below is the biopsy of a 60 year old patient with a history of chronic gastritis.

Describe the features of the gastric biopsy:

Note the dark rim of cells in the picture: this is the marginal zone of the LN. In marginal zone lymphoma there is a proliferation of the B cells in this area of the LN. Beneath the marginal zone is the mantle zone which encircles the follicle. The marginal zone contains post-follicular memory cells - which have been activated by T cell dependent antigens. 
(note the marginal zone is adjacent to the paracortex where the T cells reside)

What do you see in the picture below?


H. pylori: GN curved rod which causes irritation to the mucosa over time which results in hyperplasia


What is the Diagnosis? MALT lymphoma (marginal zone)

How is this treated? PPI + antibiotics

Is this an aggressive cancer? No, it is indolent. It may remain in extranodal sites for years

When this type of cancer presents in the thyroid what is typically its etiology?
autoimmue (ex: Hashimotos)
